St. Matthew's University (SMU) includes the School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine. The School of Medicine currently has 800 students, while the School of Veterinary medicine welcomed its charter class in the Fall of 2005.[citation needed]

St. Matthew's campus is located on Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean Sea. The Cayman Islands are part of the British West Indies, so English is the national language.

Clinical students of St. Matthew's School of Medicine have been approved by the Education Department of New York, are able to complete their clinical clerkships in this state.[2]

Graduates of St. Matthew's School of Medicine are currently not able to be licensed as physicians in the following states:

  • California: As a result of a site visit[3] done by the Medical Board of California, SMU was officially disapproved for both training and licensure on February 18, 2005. [4]
  • Indiana: States SMU is disapproved.[5]
  • Kansas: Requires a medical school to be in operation for at least 15 years, so SMU is not eligible.[6]
  • Texas: similarly placed SMU on their list of "Substandard or Fraudulent Institutions" and notes that attempting to use the degree to obtain a medical license is a Class B Misdemeanor.[7]
