[edit] Future plans

St Mary's Hospital is constantly striving not only to meet the ever increasing demands placed upon its service, but to anticipate the future needs of the population which it serves. The development of St Mary's as a regional specialist centre continues, with the transfer of maternity and neonatal services, following the closure of Withington, recently completed. Neonatal surgery and Neonatal medicine are shortly to expand, thereby allowing a greater number of poorly babies to be cared for. Paediatric medicine and surgery are growing in complexity and volume, and with some conditions becoming more prevalent amongst children - such as diabetes and asthma - St Mary's response has been to develop specialist clinics to cater for children with these symptoms.

In addition to the services already listed, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, also based at St Mary's, represents a unique collaboration between Central Manchester Healthcare Trust and the Greater Manchester Police Authority. The Centre accepts emergency or self referrals from adults who have been raped or sexually assaulted.

[edit] Teaching hospital and research

As a teaching hospital, St Mary's has a significant commitment to the teaching of medical staff and has close links with the University of Manchester Medical School. There are three University Chairs in post in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Child Health and Medical Genetics. And the University has extensive research facilities on the hospital site.
