[edit] Foundations
The site for the cathedral was included in the first plan of Perth in 1838 and on February 8, 1863, the foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by the Bishop of Perth. The cathedral's official name was the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but this was shortened to St Mary's Cathedral. The cathedral was later blessed and opened, on January 29, 1865.
[edit] Style
The Cathedral was built in Gothic style, but due to Great Depression, World War II and the aftermath, no funds were available to finish it, resulting in the iron bars that are still present today.
In 1973, the central altar and lectern were added to the sanctuary and the redesigned sanctuary was consecrated on August 12.
[edit] Construction Works
At the end of 2005, construction works to extend the 1000 seating cathedral started.
