[edit] Geography
St Martin's is located in the South-East of Guernsey. It borders the Forest in the South-West, St Andrew's in the North-West and St Peter Port in the North-East. St Martin's also has a very small detachment in the West.
[edit] Beaches
The coast has quite a lot of cliffs but the beaches in St Martin's (from South-West to North-East) include:
- Part of Petit Bot Bay (pronounced 'Petty Bow')
- Saint's Bay
- Moulin Huet (pronounced 'Moolin Wet';see 'features' below)
- Petit Port (the beach is currently innaccesable from land at the moment, as the steps leading to it have been damaged)
- Marble Bay (also known as Le Pied du Mur)
- Part of Fermain Bay
[edit] Relief
St Martin's is the second highest parish (the highest is the Forest). The highest areas in the parish are in the middle but this gently slopes down to the edges, where on the coast, it finishes off with steep cliffs.
[edit] Government
Guernsey's government, the States, is responsible for major decisions that affect the entire population. But each parish has its own government that oversees parochial matters.
The top official of each parish is the Senior Constable, who generally serves for one year (more in some cases) and will have already spent an additional year in the role of Junior Constable. These two officials deal with the day to day problems of parish life, fielding inquiries from parishioners and taking action where necessary.
Larger issues, such as those that may require funds from parishioners, are discussed by the 12 members of the Douzaine who may then put the matter to the vote at a public meeting.
The douzeniers and the constables are elected by parish residents. These parish pages list the names of the senior constables and parish deputies. Clicking on the name of a deputy will provide information about the committees on which they serve and will give access to a summary of the manifesto they published prior to being elected.
[edit] Features
The features of the parish include:
- Jerbourg Point, the most South-Easterly point in the island
- Moulin Huet Bay (this large area of water includes Saint's Bay, Moulin Huet and Petit Port). Renoir famously painted a landscape here.
[edit] Main roads
The following main roads (listed from South-West to North-East) provide important links between St Martin's and the other parishes:
- Forest Road (leads to the Forest and the West of the island)
- Les Varioufs (leads to St Andrew's and the North-West of the island)
- Fort Road (leads to St Peter Port, the East Coast and the North of the island)
The following main roads (listed from West-East) are also very important as they provide access to the village centre and most of the shops:
- Rue Maze
- La Grande Rue
