St Leonard's C.E. Church

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Leonard’s Church was built in Grimsbury, the east side of Banbury town, in 1891. It was originally built as a Chapel of Ease to Christ Church in Broad Street. In 1921 Grimsbury was constituted as a separate parish and Saint Leonard’s became the parish church of Saint Leonard’s Grimsbury. In 1931 a fire destroyed much of the South side of the church and as a result, the church was redecorated and a new vestry was built. In 1978 the newly created Parish of Banbury, made up of four districts, was inaugurated. In 1998 the Banbury Team Ministry was dissolved. By Royal assent the new parish of Banbury Saint Leonard was created. In 2001 a new dais was built in the nave of the church and the High Altar was placed in the centre. The font was also moved from the South Aisle and placed in the nave at the West end of the church. In 2003 the church underwent a 'makeover' with the central pillars being painted to reflect the decoration of the ceiling which is believed to have been designed in the style of a canal boat. (The canal running nearby).

The church nave seats 156 and our church hall can hold around 100 people. Both the church and hall are widely used by the congregation for social events throughout the year. The hall is let to Lenny’s Nursery during term time and is available for hire at weekends and evenings.

[edit] Worship

The style of worship at Saint Leonard’s is liturgical. Ritual is important and incense and bells add to its solemnity. The main service is held at 10.00 a.m. on a Sunday and is a sung Eucharist with a Sunday School on most weeks. The Daily Office is said at Morning Prayer on Tuesday to Saturday inclusive, replaced by a said Eucharist on Saints days. Christmas services include Christingle, a children’s Crib Service, Carols by Candlelight and Midnight Mass. Easter services include Maundy Thursday Eucharist, ecumenical Stations of the Cross and Good Friday vigil. Once a month on the first Sunday of the month there is a Compline with prayers service. On the third Sunday of the month there is Taize prayer service.

[edit] Lenny's Sunday School

Lenny’s Sunday School is held most weeks in the church hall for children ranging in age from 3 to 11 years. The lessons are based around the lectionary readings, some activities being done together, others appropriate to their ages

[edit] Under three

There is a children’s corner at the back of the church for younger children and their parents to use during the service. The sides people also have quiet play bags to hand out as the children come in.

[edit] Choir

The Choir has a mix of adults and children and is one of the largest choirs in Banbury. They are led by a choir mistress who encourages and praises in equal amounts. The choir sings at the Sunday morning service and at weddings. The children receive a small payment for attending choir practice and services. They sing psalms and anthems weekly and perform occasionally at the Ridings. We have two organists and several pianists as stand-ins. Our music is extremely important to us and all children from age 8 up are encouraged to join the choir.
