St James Street railway station is in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in north east London, and is in Travelcard Zone 3, on the Chingford branch of the Lea Valley Lines. The station, and all trains serving it, is operated by 'one'.
[edit] History and Local Area
Located in Walthamstow, St. James Street has a strong link with its neighbouring High Street (thought to be the longest street market in Europe). Shoppers have an easy route from the southern most end of the market to the train station, which provides a fast and regular route to the top of the market (Walthamstow Central) or into Liverpool Street where their shopping adventure can continue.
After this section of the WAGN rail circuit was taken over by 'one', the station required some redevelopment. The construction of a dual staircase, allowing passengers to access the train platform without passing through the main body of the station itself, provided relatives of commuters the ability to meet their loved ones as soon as they get off the train. More importantly, it meant that the ticket office could be securely locked up over night and has reduced the volume of graffiti that previously accrued.
The cashpoint located directly outside the station has long been known as a muggers paradise, with a long history of credit card fraud developing from this point. Situated under the railway bridge has also made it a good place for target practice by the friendly neighbourhood pigeons.
