St Giles', Oxford
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St Giles' is a wide street in the centre of Oxford, England. To the north, the road divides into Woodstock Road to the left and Banbury Road to the right, both major roads through North Oxford.
To the east are the Lamb and Flag public house, St John's College, the Oxford Internet Institute and Balliol College. To the west are the Eagle and Child public house where J. R. R. Tolkien and fellow members of the Inklings met, Pusey House (St Cross College), St Benet's Hall, Blackfriars and the Taylor Institution with the Ashmolean Museum behind it (main entrance in Beaumont Street). At the southern end is the Martyrs' Memorial that commemorates the Oxford martyrs of the 16th century. At the northern end is St Giles' Church.
Each September, for two days the street is closed to traffic for the traditional St Giles' Fair.
