St. Paul's School

Head Master Rev. Lalrema Darlong
Established 1943
School type Private School
Location Agartala, Tripura, India

St. Paul's School, as an M.E. School, was started by New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society in 1943 with a view to teaching Tribal students belonging to the minority Christian faith of the interior villages of Tripura. From then onwards until 1964 this school was run by the said society. In 1964, the general administration of the school was handed over to the Tripura Baptist Christian Union. So long the medium of instruction was Bengali. The Union with the approval and support of the N. Z. B. M. S. commenced to switch the school over to English Medium in 1971.

The school has been upgraded stage by stage. It was upgraded to Senior Basic School in 1961 and to High School in 1980.

The school is recognised by the department of Education, Govt. of Tripura and is affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), New Delhi.

It aims to give the children a sound physical, intellectual, moral and spiritual education based on Christian principles.

The school will provide for educational benefits to the children of minority Christian community. But persons belonging to other communities not opposed to Christian faith may also be allowed to take the benefit of the school if so decided by the school authority and approved by the Tripura Baptist Christian Union.

It is made clear that this school is an organisation of the said Union which has set up the school with the aims and objects mentioned in the memorandum of the Union as such the principles, aims and objects of the said union shall also be reflected and followed in the school to extent considered necessary by the said Union.

The former proposal could not receive a unanimous opinion. Finally we were rather compelled to taking the later proposal of switching over the teaching medium to English from 1970. And now it has developed into a High School. The first batch for the ICSE wrote their exams in 1982.

[edit] School Affiliation

Affiliation to which board was a matter of discussion and consideration for the management for a good number of years. The management at last with the consent of the Tripura Baptist Christian Union (TBCU) council decided to get affiliated with Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ISCE), New Delhi. But it was not an easy task. After many years of contacts and meetings and correspondence the school was affiliated to ISCE for ICSE (Class X) course in the year 1981. The 1st batch of students wrote ICSE exam. In 1983.

[edit] Computer Education Programme

The modern world is moving towards the age of computer and students need to equip themselves to meet such situation. In order to do that the computer literacy programme was introduced in our school in 1992. Since then classes are conducted in full swing. I believe that this will certainly be an added blessing to our students in future.

[edit] Co-curricular activities

In our school we emphasise on education being more comprehensive and thus involve students inside and outside class activities providing co-curricular opportunities to the students to develop their talents. Students are divided in 4 houses viz. Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow for this purpose. Inter house competition in football, cricket, class-wise, debate, quiz and drawing etc. are organised from time to time to help students to develop a spirit of healthy competition and also to bring out their hidden talents. Students enjoy very much having such activities.

Our major co-curricular activities of the year are of course the Sport day in which students are involved with great zeal in different events. Our school team represented our state once in All India Hand Ball competition held in Bangalore.

[edit] Hostel

For students of remote villages hostel is a boon. Our hostel is as old as the school. From the beginning the main concern was to provide hostel accommodation to such Tribal children who lack educational facilities in the villages. In 1943 all the 14 students (12 boys and 2 girls) lived in the hostel. In course of time this number increases. There are 228 boarders in the hostel in 1993 session. Ours is the largest Tribal hostel in Tripura. With the generous financial assistance of the State Government we built three very beautiful and spacious pucca hostels including a renovated study hall. All the bamboo roof of the hostels are replaced with GCI sheets.

[edit] Staff

The school has 51 staff members out of which 44 are involved in teaching, 3 are in the office as non-teaching and another 4 helpers in the office. In the hostel attached to the school we have one superintendent and one matron for boys and girls respectively. To assist them there are manager and mashis working in the hostel.
