[edit] Who and Where
Saint Maria Goretti High School is located in Hagerstown, Maryland and the school has been in operation since 1933. From 1933 to 1955 the school was titled St. Mary's High School but in 1955 the school earned it's new name.
Maria Goretti was an Italian girl who was "murdered to protect her purity" per quote of Goretti's website, www.goretti.org.
"St. Maria Goretti High School was named after a young Italian girl, Maria Goretti, who was murdered in order to protect her purity. She asked for forgiveness for her assassin to a visiting priest just before her death, and later she was said to have appeared to her accuser in a dream in which she personally granted him forgiveness and an armful of white lilies as a peace offering. Maria Goretti led a very ordinary life. But in spite of her simplicity, her great faith and love for God made her truly extraordinary."
Goretti currently has 212+ students.
[edit] Principal Christopher M. Siedor
Per quote from the "Gael Wittens" school newspaper:
As with most people, Mr. Siedor's path to becoming the principal is one that winds through many different places and a variety of jobs. After having been awarded an ROTC scholarship and becoming a Distinguished Military Student and Graduate, Mr. Siedor left the nation's oldest private military college, Norwich University, with a degree and certification as a secondary social studies teacher and Regular Army Comission in the Medical Service Corps. This Conneticut "yankee" married his college sweetheart, Pamela, in September 1970 and went to flight school to become an aeromedical evacuation pilot. The summer of 1971 found this new first lieutenant picking up both U.S. and Vietnamese wounded soldiers in Vietnam. At the end of his year long tour, Lt. Siedor had medevaced 719 patients and received for his actions the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Bronze Star, and 16 Air Medals.
Lt. Seidor returned to Fort George G. Meade, Maryland and served as an operations officer for the post's aeromedical evacuation unit and after being promoted to Captain, took command of a field hospital. From there he went to Fort Sam Houston, Texas for further officer training and then to Fort Rucker, Alabama and an assignment at the Army's aviation school as a crash rescue aviator and instructor pilot. During that time at Ft. Rucker, Cpt. Siedor earned a Master's Degree in Education Administration and became an emergency medical technician.
The next tour of 3 years found Maj. Seidor commanding an aeromedical evacuation unit at Fort Wainwright, Alaska with the unique distinction of that unit being the best in the Army. From there Maj. Seidor was sent to West Point to both work in the Hospital and teach in the Academy while completing the Army's Command and General Staff College.
Following this were assignments that included being the aviation officer for the 7th Medical Command with the responsibility for oversight of aeromedical evacuation for all Army personnel and their families in Europe and returning to the United States to be the post inspector general for Fort Detrick, Maryland. Lieutenant Colonel Siedor's final job was to serve as the troop commander at Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii.
After 23 years in uniform, Lt. Col. Siedor left the Army as a Master Aviator with the Legion of Merit and became Mr. Siedor and started teaching in the fall of 1993 at St. John's Literary Institution at Prospect Hall, in Frederick, Maryland. There for the next 7 years he was engaged as a social studies teacher, varsity coach of four sports and mock trial moderator.
Finally, in the summer of 2000 the "road" led Mr. Siedor to Hagerstown and he became the principal of St. Maria Goretti High School.
