[edit] New Regional Airport
The current St. George airport is land-locked and has no room for expansion. The current airport's runway and terminal is too small to accommodate larger aircraft the city is in demand for. Due to the rapid expansion of the St. George community and surrounding areas, a new airport has been proposed. It will be built just southeast of St. George on a site which once was an airfield and has since abandonded since 1961. Up until the beginning of the current decade, the old runway was used for vehicle drag racing and radio controlled aircraft.
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was completed in August 2006. The study concluded the impact on the environment and noise pollution would be minimal. Plans for the new airport include a single runway capable of accommodating regional jets as well as other larger Boeing type aircraft. The runway will be oriented at approximately 010/190 degrees. It will initially be 9,300 by 150 feet with future plans for the runway to be extended to 11,500 by 150 feet. The airport will also include an Air Traffic Control Tower, as well as a precision instrument approach, things the current airport does not have which are vital to future demand of air travel.
The FAA gave St. George a $17.2 million grant for the project. The entire project is expected to cost over $110 million. The city is expected to break ground on the proposed site in late 2006 with completion of the airport expected in 2010.
