Sri Petaling (Formerly known as Bandar Baru Seri Petaling), is a main suburb in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Located at the south of the city near Sungai Besi and Bukit Jalil.
This suburb was developed since 1981. Before the suburb was established, it used to be a rubber plantation land and hills. It is located in Southern Kuala Lumpur which is part of Sungai Besi. In between mid 80's to the mid 90's, it was well known as the 'rubbish area' as there was a large garbage disposal land and often brings out a bad smell when people approach the entrance of Sri Petaling. The garbage disposal land is no more in use and it's not visible today as it was converted into a playground and carpark space due to the '98 Commonwealth Games.
Population in Sri Petaling was not high in the early years as it was really far from the city and isolated from everything else. The population grew in the late 80's when 2 passage ways to the next suburb(Salak Selatan aka Salak South & Taman Gembira aka Happy Garden)was open. The growth of population did not stop there as more and more development has been done over the decade. In 1997, Shah Alam Expressway was open and allowing people to travel to Subang Jaya area within 10 minutes. This Shah Alam Expressway was one of the reason of rapid growth of population in Sri Petaling.
Currently, Sri Petaling have their own Carrefour and The Store hypermarkets. There is also a hotel called Hotel Sri Petaling. Food is not a problem in Sri Petaling because there is a lot of 24 hours food stalls everywhere. For fishing fanatics, there is a freshwater fishing pond too. A large mosque also located near the city centre of Sri Petaling.
Housing area, one of the first fully developed and people moving in would be in the area of Jalan Puteri Senggang as the main road, Jalan Wan Empok 1 and Jalan Wan Empok 2. In the 80's these area mention used to be the centre of Sri Petaling. Houses those days were sold in the range of RM40,000.00 to RM60,000.00 and the value of the houses today are up to RM500,000.00 - RM1,000,000.00. The house which was known as the haunted house on 63, Jalan Wan Empok Dua, was actually a rumour.
