SR Class W

The Southern Railway Class W were 3-cylinder 2-6-4 tank engines intended for short distance freight traffic. They were essentially a tank version of the N1 class 2-6-0 and used on short-distance duties of the same type. Wheels, cylinders and motion were common to those two classes and the U1 class.
They were generally well liked by their crews apart from the fact that the driver was on the right hand side, making accurate stopping difficult if the markers were on the left (the norm).
Introduced in 1931 they never seemed to acquire a nickname.
The class was mainly used around London and on the ex-LBSCR routes.
