Spy ship

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A spy ship is a ship controlled by a nation's government, which hangs about intending to get information about other nations' activities by overhearing communications. Many spy ships were used during the Cold War.

See USS Liberty incident for an instance where a spy ship got into difficulties.

Many spy ships spying on the USSR, as well as those operated by the Soviets themselves, were disguised as trawlers.

When the Cold War ended, at least one trawler-type spy ship based in Denmark was retired, all the spying gear was stripped out of it, it was sold to whoever would buy it, and after a thorough refit it became one of the first tourist scuba diving liveaboards to operate in the Red Sea.
