Springfield Township, Summit County, Ohio

Springfield Township is one of the 16 original townships in Summit County, Ohio, United States. It lies in the southeastern portion of the county on the eastern edge, bordering Portage and Stark counties. The population as of 2000 was 15,168, up from 14,787 in 1990 (Ohio State University, 2003). It was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It is about 14.7 square miles in size (Springfield Township, 2003-2004).

Springfield is surrounded by Lake Township in Stark County and Green to the south, Coventry Township to the west, Akron to the northwest, Tallmadge and Mogadore to the northeast and Suffield Township in Portage County to the east. The village of Lakemore, Ohio lies completely within the township. (Commercial Survey Company, 2004).

Most of the township is in the Springfield Local School District, with part of it being in the Green Local School District. All of the township is also in the Portage Lakes Joint Vocational School District. (Summit County Fiscal Officer, 2005)

[edit] Marching Band

The Springfield Spartan Marching Band is directed by Mr. Ernie Cole with assistant directors Miss Carrie Reynolds and Miss Ashley Cooper. In the first half of the 2006 football season, the band played music from West Side Story. The second half they performed Disney favorites.

The township government consists of three trustees, who share the executive and legislative powers, and a township clerk. The township does not have a judicial system; major cases are dealt with through the Summit County court system and minor ones through the Akron Municipal Court.
