It appears that the comments regarding this years competition and the expected finalists is correct. Both Tannum Sands and St John's were at a high level last year and both have strong teams again. St John's may have the edge over the beachsiders as they boast one capricornia representative and two other Port Curtis reps.
I believe that speed may be the difference between the two sides this year. St John's look quick!
tannum will have a great number of their team returning from last year's semi final epic against benearaby. they also have included some really good new players. they do look a settled and serious team.
all in all it should be a craker!
doesn't anyone think that there could be another contender? i think that the opening game between tannum and st john's will make qualifying for the loser really tough. take a look at the draw. if tannum lose they'd still need to beat calliope to get through. they have a good looking team on paper calliope.
but if you look at the draw that they have it makes progression seem impossible. west have the same draw as tannum so goal difference may really be significant in this pool.
now the draw has been altered so that everyone in pool a will play each other it now appears even more likely that tannum sands and st johns will progress into the semifinals.
after all was said and done a calliope tannum final was the just result. these two were clearly the strongest sides through their pool games.
tannum were dominant on the night with a 2-nil victory. calliope did have injuries to three players which did not help their cause.
well done to the winners and runners up for such a good game in the final and when they met in the pool matches.
the draw certainly tends to favour those two progressing as they have the opportunity to slip up in one game and still progress.
the opening round saw a titanic struggle between st John's and tannum with the saints winning 1-0. west were destroyed by calliope 6-0 in their opener. boyne played and won a friendly against clinton.
south were the winners of the only competitive group b game.
at this stage the st John's - calliope game this week is the big one of the round and will go a long way to show if calliope can progress to the semis.
tannum have an undermanned boyne in the local derby and will be looking to register their first win of the season in what becomes a make or break match to progress to the final stage. tannum are also undermanned.
group b fixtures really get underway with south looking to wrap up a semi's spot with a win.
