[edit] History

SpotlightPHP was designed with the purpose of introducing a content management system to a company called Awardspace. It was to be a verified scripting by Awardspace to work on Awardspace's free hosting plans. It was also originally named Spotlight, but because of the conflict between Apple's name of their Search utility on Mac OS X, it was named SpotlightPHP.

It was started by Sean Bowe, a program development team leader of Awardspace. It consists now of Sean Bowe, a programmer named Alex Bonnot(phpShift), a webmaster named Brett Griffin(all three who create the raw code and manage the scriptings support / downloads), and the other staff members that support / create open source suppliments to the software, such as styles and mods.

The first version was released in November 2006. That version was Spotlight Beta 1. It was followed in the same month by Spotlight Beta 2, then again in the same month by SpotlightPHP 1.0. There is no longer any way to get a copy of the beta versions. Only SpotlightPHP 1.0 is available for download.

All versions have run using files to store information rather than a database. This freed users from dependence on MySQL, but also created some problems for users on hosts with limits to how PHP could access files.
