Sportspower cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sportspower Cup is a weekly interschool Football (soccer) competition held every Wednesday afternoon at the Boyne Island Tannum Sands (BITS) soccer club grounds on Boyne Island. The competition is open to schools of the Gladstone education district.

The competition began in 2000 and has been held each year since. The only multiple winner of the competition is the Tannum Sands State School who have won it four times (2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006). Other winners include: Boyne (2001), Clinton (2002) and St Johns (2004).

The winner of each year's trophy then meets the Rockhampton Girls champion to contest the InterCity Cup. This competition has been won on all but four occasions by Sportspower Cup champions.

The competition's most successful team is Tannum Sands as the only multiple winner, but also as the only team to have contested the semi-finals or better in each year of the competition.

In 2005 the competition moved to the BITS Soccer Club grounds. In the previous years of the competition it was held at Wolves Soccer Club (2000) and Gladstone United (2001-2004).

The final of 2005 was between Calliope and Tannum Sands. Tannum won the game 2-nil. This was the first time that Calliope had reached the final and the third for Tannum.

Tannum Sands have a 100% record of winning the deciders they have played.

The season was notable for the first loss by St John's in either Toyworld Cup or Sportspower Cup in two years.

Tannum Sands then went on to defeat the Parkhurst State School for the 2005 InterCity Cup by a score of 2-nil at BITS fields.

The 2006 season was rescheduled and began in February so that the competition could act as a selection trial for the Port Curtis Representative team.

Nine teams again took part in the competition with Star of the Sea returning after not fielding a team last year.

The 2006 Grand Final was played between defending champion Tannum Sands and the Toyworld Cup's most dominate team Gladstone West. Tannum defeated West 0ne-nil in the second period of extra-time.

This was the first time that a team had defended the title in the competition's history. It was also the fourth time Tannum Sands has won the competition.

Tannum Sands went to defeat the winner of the Rockhampton competition 2-0 in September.
