Spoons were a Canadian New Wave-new romantic synth pop music group who formed in 1979 and were popular in the early 1980s. In 1983, they won "Group of the Year" at the U-Know awards.
The band, from Burlington, Ontario, consisted of Gordon Deppe (vocals and guitar), Sandy Horne (vocals and bass), Rob Preuss (keyboards and piano) and Derrick Ross (drums). Preuss also replaced Brett Wickens in 1980. In the late eighties, Preuss, who went on to play with Honeymoon Suite, and Ross left the band and were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry.
The band released five albums and a soundtrack that was credited to Gordon Deppe but included a couple songs from the "Tell No Lies" ep. Their most popular songs included "Romantic Traffic", "Nova Heart", "Old Emotions" and "Tell No Lies".
While their 1982 single "Nova Heart" was a dance-oriented New Wave song, their later singles would downplay their synthpop orientation. 1984's "Romantic Traffic", a downtempo song with adult contemporary leanings (with a music video filmed in a Toronto subway), and the upbeat "Tell No Lies" (paired with a comical video) would feature a more mainstream pop sound. Their 1986 single "Bridges Over Borders" marked a departure from their characterstic sound and showcased a harder rock orientation. One of the final singles, "Waterline" (1989), was a languid, introspective ballad.
At present, Gordon Deppe is an 80s music programmer for Galaxie (see also his MySpace site Gord Deppe), and he has a new pop-rock trio called Fluid. Sandy Horne is now a member of the band Crooked Trail , a First Nations rock group from the Niagara Region. The Spoons
