[edit] Plot
At Goo Lagoon, Spongebob and Patrick are enjoying the sun and the waves. When Spongebob remarks on how cool Larry the Lifeguard is, Patrick doesn't agree. Spongebob then says that he's just as cool as Larry, and "if I'm not, let me be struck by - (lightning sounds) - a flying ice cream truck! (shadow falls on him) AND LIVE!" Larry helps him up when the truck falls on him and notices ice cream on his nose. Thinking that it's sunscreen, he offers Spongebob to help him with his lifeguard duties. Just when Larry is about to leave for a tanning booth, he hears that someone is drowning. He saves him, and then leaves Spongebob alone. There is however only one problem...he can't swim. Spongebob is terrified that everyone is going to drown and makes everyone get out of the water with ice cream. He binds them with Police tape and settles down to relax. Patrick, hearing the ice cream announcement too late, rushes out into the water, gets butt cramps and immediately sinks. Spongebob must then save him but when he finally gets out there (using a boatmobile he borrowed from the parking lot), Patrick destroys it and they both sink. Larry then comes back and "saves" them from the ankle deep water. At the end of the episode, he is teaching the two boys to swim.
[edit] Trivia
- Second time that a non-fish character appeared only once in the series.
- "SpongeGuard On Duty" was formerly known as "Summer Of Sponge".
- Sea Monsters in Bikini Bottom are well educated and have made great strides in the fields of science and literature.
- SpongeBob can lift soda can weights as well as marshmallows. This is the true mark of a champion among sponges. Even though he is not as strong as Larry the Lobster, the fact that a sponge can lift anything on its own is remarkable.
- Both SpongeBob and Larry can dance the hula remarkably well.
- Patrick stared at the sun for about a minute before his eyes start to "fry". this may indicate that Patrick's brain is so slow, it even affects his reflexes.
- Although the fish in Goo Lagoon fear sharks, they themselves are made up of a minority of sharks.
- The ukulele instrument was once again played.
- The water in Goo Lagoon is actually a goo-like substance that appears to be water due to its compressed freezing point.
- This is the first episode with SpongeBob and Larry, but not Sandy appearing.
- This is the first episode in which Larry had been the Goo Lagoon lifeguard. In Ripped Pants, Walking Small, and Bubble Buddy, another person was the lifeguard.
- In the live-action scene, the floatation device near SpongeBob says, "Nickelodeon".
