Spheal (German: Seemops, French: Obalie, Japanese: タマザラシ Tamazarashi) is a fictional character from the Pokémon franchise.

Its name comes from sphere and seal, referring to its spherical shape, and its likeness to a seal.

Spheal is a small, charming spherical creature with generally the anatomy of an underdeveloped Sea Lion, with a bold blue body, a cream-colored underside, small white tusks, small white flippers, a little blue tail fin, and the lack of facial whiskers. Spheal’s shape dictates that it is much faster to roll around to travel than to waddle with its flippers, so it is always seen rolling around, especially when the season for ice floes arrives.

Spheal, in spite of its infancy, is fully capable of living in arctic environments such as a tundra. Though it is not obvious, its body is fully covered in a layer of plushy fur that feels fluffy to the touch. This is surprisingly good at insulating Spheal against the cold when it is rolling about on ice floes or diving into the sea, for it apparently never feels the cold at all.

When groups of Spheal eat, they instinctively show their pleasure by clapping and making other noises. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.

Spheal is commonly found in the Shoal cave in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and Pokémon Emerald, by walking or surfing, though it is found nowhere else. However, in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Hexagon Brother Blusix has a Shadow Spheal that can be snagged from him early in the game at the Cipher Lab.

Spheal has solid hit points among basic Pokémon, but it only has average statistics everywhere else and a very bad speed rating, making Spheal somewhat hard to train while awaiting evolution into Sealeo at level 32.

Spheal’s list of moves learned by leveling up is identical to those of its evolutions, but they can be learned at lower levels while Spheal remains unevolved. The final move it can learn, Sheer Cold, is learned at level 49 while its final evolution Walrein learns it at level 61. But this would be considered a moot point when training for level 100 competitive play at any rate. Also, when purified in Pokémon XD, Spheal gains the previously unattained move Charm.

Spheal appears in the Pokémon Anime in Episode 312, in which Ash visits the Oceanic Museum in Slateport City.

Spheals also make a movie-appearance in Destiny Deoxys, where one of the new characters run into one.

Spheal has appeared on a few cards in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, all as Basic Water-type cards: EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua (twice as Team Aqua’s Spheal), EX Hidden Legends, and EX Legend Maker.
