Hello and welcome. You can sign your name with ~~~~. IMO, "Zhou Enlai" sounds closer to the acutal pronounciation than "Joe Un-lai". The Zh sound is not pronouced like J. Unless we use complex notation (such as those used in dictionaries), the name will still be mispronouced. Let's discuss this at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style for China-related articles so others can participate.--Jiang 01:03, 23 Feb 2004 (UTC)
[edit] A-Mei
If it's not paraphrased enough, then please do fix it. Cheers, Jiang 08:19, 24 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Mr. Spencer195, you were obviously not at all informed on the entire "Little Black Sambo" issue you wrote for Ethnic issues in Japan. If you had read the book you mentioned as a source, please show where such completely false and misreading associations were made.

[edit] Chinese family names
Great links to wiki dictionary. Thanks! I didn't know there are dictionary entries for those characters. Are those entried imported from some public domain database? Kowloonese 22:34, 27 May 2004 (UTC)
- Nanshu filled in the data with a bot, getting the information from the Unihan database (which in turn got their information from CEDICT (http://www.mandarintools.com/cedict.html), which is open-source). ☞spencer195 22:52, 27 May 2004 (UTC)
- Actually, I think the only problem with linking the characters like this is that the underlining can be kind of distracting and the page can get a little harder to edit. I wonder if there is some way to modify the Wikipedia software so that Chinese characters would automatically link to their corresponding Wiktionary page? ☞spencer195 22:55, 27 May 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Ethnicity infobox
I actually think your recent change of colors for the ethnicity infobox in the article Jew is probably an improvement, but it really should be taken up at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ethnic Groups Template and Wikipedia:Infobox rather than changed in one place on an ad hoc basis. -- Jmabel 05:37, Jun 10, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Full Nice Handbag Co
I counted roughly 2:1 for deletion, which is in the realm of judgement calls. Given that that the responses from people in Hong Kong were of the "I've never heard of it" variety, I went for deletion. -- Cyrius|✎ 01:12, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Taipei
Nice work on all the Taiwanese county info boxes. If you get a chance, the table at Taipei needs some reformatting too. (I don't know how to do it myself.) Cheers, Jiang 04:33, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
[edit] about Taiwan counties & cities
Thanks for creating and fixing the tables. I hope you can use your map to change my old map. If you can, I'll thank for your work. In addition, the maps can add blue color for ocean or sea.(like New York Map) Thank you very much! (Sichinaren 07:06, 14 Jun 2004 (UTC))
I was the one who came up with the shorthand for the "WP:SC" for shortcuts, and have been away for a while - apparently the standard for the new tags is lowercase, which is fine - I just didnt know. thanks. BTW, it looks like redirects work fine - so Moving the VFD template to vfd allows both to work. That should be fine. -Stevertigo 19:52, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Favor
Please look at this and see if the tags that I added are valid. If the case doesnt matter, (due the redirects magically working) then caps can still be used for visibility, eh? I have to run, so if you can follow up, TBG! Thanks. -Stevertigo

It was an extremely pleasant surprise for me to see that I have received the barnstar. I want to thank you for your support, and I am sure that I'll keep on contributing more and more towards Wikipedia.

I don't have the link - can you post to my page? Thanks, Leonard G. 02:10, 11 Sep 2004 (UTC) Must have missed it on the main page - I can't read to find the previous day's page or the article reference - any specific link (I'll save the HTML as a memento)

[edit] Hu Jintao Portrait
Hi Spencer,
I got the Hu Jintao portrait from the website of the CCP-owned newspaper China Daily. I have searched this website and other websites high and low to see if I could find any other good portraits of Jiang Zemin or Deng Xiaoping in the traditional uniform of the Central Military Commission (the green suit), but I can't still find a hi-res portrait of either. It would be great if you could try and search the rest of the site for these types of pictures. Thanks! --Valentino 04:31, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info. I've found some decent headshots of Jiang Zemin in a business suit (See [1]), but no larger versions or headshots of him in a Mao suit. I'll keep searching. -spencer195 05:05, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Actually, Jiang's Wikipedia entry has a picture of him in the Mao suit, but a face portrait of the same would be better for the entry. I did find a picture of Jiang in a traditional Chinese suit along with George W. Bush, but I don't think it's close enough. I hope you find it; I'll keep looking also. --Valentino 06:47, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] zh-cn, zh-tw -> zh
if didn't change this, crosslink robot doesn't work.
for example, zh:A page has a link to en:A, en:A has many links and zh-cn:A, then the robot can't automatic add the many links to zh:A, I fint this, so I do this change.
And, anyhow I will pause to make this change.--LiDaobing 17:25, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Spencer195, absolutely be involved with editing/contributing to the articles. Part of the experience for the students is to in fact interact with Wikipedians. [edit] Category:Chinese dissidents
Hi. Just wondering why you created this category? It duplicates the contents of List of Chinese dissidents, which contains a bunch of additional information. I think the general practice is to have one or the other, but not both. Noisy | Talk 18:17, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Expressway maps
Hi Spencer195,
These maps will be coming soon! I've already done one or two for a few expressways (e.g. Jingzhang), these will get them first. Maps take quite some time, but the moment a map for an expwy is done, I'll add it to the article. Thanks again for the encouragement!
Best, --DF08 19:06, Oct 9, 2004 (UTC)
PS: Check out the 5th Ring Road article in Chinese -- it's got a map (scroll down), that's a prototype of an earlier map I made. (I wasn't born an artist, so improvements to come...) The new ones will be unified in size (300x300, as the pictures) and be a bit more informative.
- Hi again,
- Check out Jingcheng Expressway -- how do you like the map? I used OmniGraffle on Mac OS X 10.3 to do it... wasn't all too difficult. --DF08 (English) 15:13, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Vrykolaka
Hello Spencer,
Thank you for your welcoming message, this is much appreciated. Howerver, I'm an old wikipedist (I favour this term over wikipedian), since I first contributed in june 2003. It just happens that I usually edit the French Wikipedia. That is why my English page is not that organised.
I saw you signed a petition for the return of the Old Wikipedia. Do you know if there is any petition or lobbying or whatever to change the rules for hyperlinking? I find it annoying to have a double bracket+pipe rule for internal links and a single bracket+space rule for external links… Reply to Vrykolaka 12:49, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] You're an admin!
Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 05:06, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello Spencer! I want to congratulate you on being an administrator. I am sure you will find the new job enjoyable, and I'm confident we as a whole (with other Wikipedians) can work together to make Wikipedia better. --DF08 (English) 13:45, 29 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] recent deletions
I know you're new at this, but some of your recent deletions are a problem. First off, just because the uploader or author requested something be deleted, it is still not within policy to honor that request. The one exception is deletion of User: subpages, because everything becomes "owned" by the entire project, not just the originator. The second thing is that when you delete something, you should leave in a summary of the text, as in "Content was: Foo". -- Netoholic @ 06:34, 2004 Oct 31 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, images are not retrievable, which is why you have to be careful there. What was Rhett Eldred before it was deleted? -- Netoholic @ 07:12, 2004 Oct 31 (UTC)
- Checking the history (something you must always do) shows that it was on WP:VFD. I would say that it can be speedy deleted, since it is clearly vanity and contains personal information of the user. Please make sure to leave a "Content was: " deletion summary and leave a note of it's deletion on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Rhett Eldred. -- Netoholic @ 07:48, 2004 Oct 31 (UTC)
[edit] "Uploader requested" deletions
I noticed in the deletion log that you have deleted a number of images while leaving the edit summary "Uploader requested deletion" or something similiar. I wanted to clarify to you that just because an uploader requests one of their images be deleted (unless it is a personal image, like a photograph for Wikipedia:Facebook) does not mean that it can be automatically deleted. Unless it meets one of the criteria for images at Wikipedia:Candidates for speedy deletion, then it must go through the full one-week process at Wikipedia:Images for deletion. BLANKFAZE | (что??) 18:36, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Regional notice boards
I notice you left a message on the Category discussion page on moving the notice boards from "X Wikipedians' notice board" to "X-related topics notice board". I think this is important - the current convention discourages the contribution of those who are interested in a particular country/culture but are not residents. Did you have any success/opposition? --Oldak Quill 19:38, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Small cap for surname
I have noticed that you recently made Zhang Ziyi's surname ALL CAPITAL. That was what I proposed two to three years ago. Back then, there were objections because it did not follow some wikipedia naming conventions. My user page talked about that too. I was wondering if your recent action will be shot down by the same group of people who want to stick to an arbituary choice that fails in international usage. I just hope those who objected three years ago are no longer here, then we can do it right. Perhaps your new standard should be updated in the Wikipedia naming convention. Kudos for the starting a revolution. You have my support. :-) Kowloonese 00:47, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Re: admin
Hi Spencer,
I accept the nomination with pleasure. I'm here for Wikipedia -- be that contributing articles, writing up about the Beijing expressways, or helping out in general. I'm ready for the challenge.
I'm also rather sorry I failed to vote for you when you were about to become an admin yourself. I was always in favour of you being an admin, you can count this as my (rather delayed) vote -- of confidence -- a yes vote.
A personal thank you -- to you -- for your confidence, in me, in my contributions. I now face the consensus on the vote page with pleasure. :-)
All the best, --DF08 04:42, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project
Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)
[edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. – Ram-Man (comment) (talk)[[]] 14:12, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Template:Move to Wikitravel
What are your thoughts/reasons for creating this? Wikitravel is not a Wikimedia sister project, and as such, shouldn't be treated like Template:Move to Wiktionary. We have no instructions for just how to move that information, especially because Wikitravel uses a completely different license. -- Netoholic @ 19:46, 2004 Dec 21 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Panda.png. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Could you add a tag to let us know its copyright status? Hi. I recently came across List of Taiwanese counties by population, List of Taiwanese counties by area and List of Taiwanese counties by population density, which were created by you. [edit] Image Tagging Image:Opiumwar.jpg
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Opiumwar.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --Durin 19:19, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Wuyi.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Wuyi.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Chowbok ☠ 02:12, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
