Spermicidal lubricant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spermicidal lubricant - is a special unscented, clear, unflavored, and non-staining liquid with the properties of a spermicide. It usually comes as a separate spermicide contraceptive in the form of foams, gels, creams, etc. with gliding effect for lubricating the erogenous zones and preventing the spermatozoon from entering into the cervix at the same time.
The main component of major spermicidal lubricants is nonoxynol-9, a special chemical that immobilizes sperm cells or kills them.
Spermicidal lubricants are often used for condoms covering. This extra protection helps to decrease the risks of unwanted pregnancy in case of condom leakage or breakage. The risk is significantly reduced, but not eliminated.
[edit] Side Effects
Spermicidal lubricants may cause a number of side effects like all other spermicides do. Along with some serious allergic reactions, application of spermicidal lubricants may lead to genital irritation, inflammation and the general discomfort.
Spermicidal lubricants used alone without a condom reduces the risk of the pregnancy, but does not prevent transmitting some diseases and infections, including HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, genital herpes, gonorrhea, etc.
