[edit] About Spencerport High School
Spencerport High School is the only high school in the Spencerport Central School District, located at 2707 Spencerport Road, in Spencerport, New York. Lead by head Principal Ty Zinkiewich, the school has over fourteen hundred students and staff. [1]
The school is two stories high and has two gymnasiums and a pool. A new pool is expected to be built by 2009. It has a weight room and an extra practice room used for cheerleading, wrestling and baseball. The school recently built an auditorium that seats one thousand people.
[edit] Block Scheduling
As of September 2006, high school students are taking classes under a block schedule. Block scheduling is defined as at least part of the daily schedule organized into larger blocks of time (more than 60 minutes) to allow flexibility for a diversity of instructional activities. The Board of Education approved the change on November 8, 2005, following three years of examining the advantages and disadvantages.
Spencerport’s block schedule features four 80-minute classes each day, one 30 minute advisement period and one 35 minute after school activity period. “Our goal is to maximize the instructional opportunities for our students,” said Ty Zinkiewich, high school principal. “We feel extremely confident that this change will have a positive impact on the culture, climate and learning experiences that take place on a daily basis.”
Block helps students They will have fewer classes to prepare for each day and/or more time to prepare for them. Students will be exposed to a variety of instructional methods and will have more time to process information.
For example, during Advisement period, students cannot meet with teachers for individual help and enrichment, listen to school wide announcements, meet with group members to work on projects or meet for special events, such as class assemblies. After school help will still be available for students, but no one likes to stay after anyways.
Why change? Research has proven that in a block schedule instructional time increases, and teachers and students are able to explore content in greater depth, which leads to more in-depth learning and high student and teacher morale. Schools that use a block schedule have experienced increased student achievement, with benefits showing in higher GPAs, lower failure and dropout rates, higher college enrollment rates and SAT scores. It also leads to 80 minutes of pure lectures and notes, because some teachers need to learn better.
The transition Staff training began more than a year ago. Students learned about block schedules during their course selection. The high school “test drove” a block schedule the week before February break, 2005, with students taking current classes under the block period schedule.
The high school pages here on the district website feature a comparison of the current schedule and a block schedule. The daily start and end time of school remain the same, lunch periods are shortened from 40 to 30 minutes and the home room or advisement period is expanded from five to 30 minutes. A block schedule will reduce the time students spend “passing” in the halls from one class to another from 40 minutes to 25 minutes per day.
[edit] Spencerport Academy
Spencerport Academy, the district's Alternative High School, opened in September of 2003, with 32 students. The Academy is a "school within a school," and is located within the High School, in the recently built east wing.
The Academy serves 36 students in grades 9-12, and offers Regents-level courses. Students who graduate from the Academy are awarded a Spencerport Diploma, with the appropriate designation. The Academy is an integrated program that is open to students with or without an IEP.
The Academy is staffed by an administrator (Assistant Principal), full time secretary, guidance counselor, social worker, and five teachers (English, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Special Ed.).
The Academy is a voluntary program for students who are at risk of dropping out or failing. Students must be referred to the program by either the IST (Instructional Support Team) in conjunction with building administration. The student spends a day at the Academy, and is accepted or denied for enrollment based on input from the student, parent, Academy staff and administration.
