speed auction tv is a British shopping television channel owned by sit-up Ltd. The channel was launched on the 27 July 2005, and features rising price auctions lasting about 4 minutes, and sells a wide variety of products. The channel runs from 8am-1am every day. The channel is only live between 4pm and 8pm and then from 9pm until midnight on Wednesday through to Saturday.

It presently broadcasts on Sky Digital, Telewest and NTL. It does not broadcast on Freeview, however it has been known for sisters bid tv and price-drop tv which are on the platform, to broadcast pre-recorded "speed auctions" from the channel.

Prior to its launch, "speed auctions" were a slot broadcast on bid tv (as bid-up.tv). However, when bid-up changed its format to focus primarily on falling price auctions, the speed auctions became pre-recorded. In July 2005, speed auction tv launched, which took an all responsibility for bid tv's rising price auctions. As a response, the "speed auction" slot on bid tv was axed, and the channel featured recorded auctions from the new speed-auction tv. Since the launch of speed auction tv, bid tv has not featured any live rising price auctions.

[edit] The flip of the arrow

As of October 2005, the format of speed auction tv was changed similar to that of price-drop tv, purely focusing on falling price auctions. However, unlike sisters price-drop tv and bid tv, the channel sold its lots with a far fewer quantity, thus justifying the word "speed" in its name. The live broadcasting hours were still the same as the previous rising price format, and the pre-recorded slots were still being filled in with rising price auctions.

It is expected that the "falling price" auctions draw in more income for each item, however this has not been confirmed by sit-up.

On March 3, 2006, speed auction tv returned to its original rising price auction format, possibly due to the lack of viewership or competition from its sister channels. The hours were unchanged and pre-recorded slots are still filled with rising price auctions. Also unusually, 3 March 2006 was the day Telewest (sit-up Ltd owner, therefore ultimate owner of speed auction) and competing cable operator, NTL, completed their merger. It is highly unlikely however that this move would have affected the change of ideas for speed-auction.

[edit] Auctioneers

Two of the three original hosts, Lynn Taylor and Cris St Valery have moved back to their original sit-up channels - bid tv and price-drop tv respectively. The vacancies were filled with two new "auctioneers", Steve McDonald and Hannah Patterson. Steve McDonald and Marian Okai have now moved to other sit-up channels with Adèle Sica of price-drop tv, and Lisa Brash replacing them. In September 2006, Adèle Sica became freelance and has moved back primarily to price-drop tv.

Other freelance presenters have taken slots and recorded pre-recorded auctions to be broadcast when speed auction tv is not broadcasting live. These presenters include Andrea Binks, Michelle Watt, Sean McIntosh and Charlotte Mounter. On Sunday 13th August 2006, Hannah Patterson left speed auction tv, but she can still be seen in pre-recorded rising price auctions. As of Thursday 17th August, Cindy Humphries formerly of price-drop tv is working Hannah's old shifts. Marion Okai and Steve Mcdonald have now also moved back to their original channels, with Lisa Brash and Adèle Sica now covering presenters.
