Spearwood, Western Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spearwood is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Cockburn.
It was named by colonial settlers who noticed the native tea trees, scientific name Melaleuca Lancialata Chipolata, being used for spears by the aboriginal people of the Yugul tribe.
The most well-known and aesthetically pleasing street in Spearwood is Edeline Street, where businesses and residential housing are located. The houses on the street were built in the late 1800's, and many retain the character and style of the period. The street is named after Lady Edeline, wife of prominent politician Gerald Strickland, and is listed in Lonely Planet guides for the state. Spearwood's postcode is 6163.
The suburb is 85% bushland (the main population being tea trees), and housing is often threatened with bushfires in the summer months. Before European settlers the suburb consisted of market gardens.
