Speakeasy Records

Speakeasy Records is a Minneapolis-based spoken word and hip hop record label.
Founded in 1997 by e.g. bailey, it is the first[citation needed] spoken word label in Minnesota. Its early releases were a series of EPs including:
- Arkology's debut release, Maiden Voyage
- The soundtrack of blues for nina: a celebration of the life and music of nina simone a spoken word performance work, written by e.g. bailey and Miré Regulus
- The soundtrack of the award-winning[citation needed] spoken word film, village blues
- heavy water blues by the experimental spoken word collective, god's pager
- The soundtrack to the theatrical adaptation of Chinua Achebe's No Longer at Ease.
The labels first official release was Words Will Heal the Wound (Volume One), the first[citation needed] spoken word compilation in Minnesota, in 2001.
It has since gone on to release three other spoken word / hip hop albums:
- The debut album of the Minnesota hip hop artist,Truthmaze, titled Expansions + Contractions (Psoems 1:1)
- Evidence of Silence Broken (version poetic), the debut release of Austin-based spoken word artist, Zell Miller III
- Nazirah's Playhouse, by poet and playwright Nazirah P. Mickey.
It has also produced the Words Will Heal the Wound spoken word radio series in celebration of National Poetry Month, and presented on KFAI radio station. The series is currently in its 8th year.
The name of the label is sometimes given as as Tru Ruts | Speakeasy Records or Tru Ruts/Speakeasy Records.
