SPECS is a speed camera system manufactured by the British company Speed Check Services Limited.

The cameras operate as two or more sets along a route. The average speed over the distance travelled between two cameras is calculated using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology.

It has come to light that the SPECS system is approved for single lane use only. Thus, if a motorist has changed lane between camera sites, then the camera evidence is inadmissible as it falls outside of the system's approval.[1]

Although the SPECS system can only monitor one lane at a time, only the operators will know which lane, and which sets are active, and are changed periodically.
