Sparrow Force

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sparrow Force was a detachment formed mostly from Australian 8th Division units, during World War II. The force was formed to defend the island of Timor, strategically located 400 miles from Darwin and the location of Penfui Airfield outside the capital of Netherlands Timor, Kupang.

The majority of the personnel in Sparrow Force were from the 2/40 Infantry Battalion, which had been formed in Tasmania, and was part of the 23rd Australian Infantry Brigade. The other two infantry battalions in the brigade, the 2/21 Inf Bn and the 2/22 Inf Bn, were based on Ambon and Rabaul who also formed the foundations of Gull Force and Lark Force.

A commando unit, the 2/2nd Independent Company, was also part of Sparrow Force. With the other forces from the 23rd Brigade it shared contingents from the 18 Anti-Tank Battery, the 2/12 Field Ambulance, 23rd Brigade Signals and the 2/11 Field Company.

Sparrow Force were reinforced on the 16 February 1942 with 189 gunners from A & C troop of the 79th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery of the Royal Artillery, mostly veterans of the Battle of Britain. Further reinforcements, an Australian infantry battalion and an American artillery regiment, were attacked en-route to Timor and returned to Darwin.

During the Japanese offensive in 1941 and 1942 Sparrow Force were the first to defeat the Japanese in open battle at Babau and at Usua Ridge on 21 and 22 February 1942. Japanese paratroopers and infantry were dug in to a defensive position at the top of Usua Ridge. After an Australian mortar barrage, Lt Col. William Leggatt led his battalion in a bayonet charge up the ridge eliminating the Japanese troops. This has been recorded as the last full battalion bayonet charge in military history. The following day however, low in ammunition and hopelessly outnumbered, Leggatt gave the order to surrender.

Many of the members of Sparrow Force who were not in the main column to surrender at Airkom on 23 February 1942 escaped to Portuguese Timor where they joined the 2/2 Independent Company. They commenced a successful guerilla campaign against the Japanese Imperial Army until their eventual withdraw in December 1942.

Of those evacuated from Timor in December, the 2/2 Independent Company was renamed the 2/2 Commando Squadron and fought in New Guinea (including on the Kokoda Track Campaign) and New Britain ending the war in Rabaul. Of the 81 members of the 2/40 Infantry Battalion evacuated, most soldiers reinforced the Tasmanian/Queenslander 2/12th Infantry Battalion of the Australian 7th Division (also known as the Rats of Tobruk) and fought in the New Guinea campaign (including the Battle of Milne Bay), Morotai and the Borneo campaign (1945).

[edit] Achievements

During the ten months Sparrow Force fought on Timor three events would dominate their place in history:

[edit] "Winnie the War Winner"

Between the surrender at Airkom and April 19, 1942 the communication link with the Australian mainland was broken. Under the direction of Captain George Parker Signaller Keith Richards, Cpl John Donovan, Signaller Jack Loveless and Sgt Jack Sargeant built a radio out of recycled parts and re-established contact with Darwin. Supplies were soon airdropped to the guerilla force.

[edit] "The Singapore Tiger"

The Japanese High Command diverted an entire division to flush out the guerillas of Sparrow Force. The highly-decorated Major ? ?, known as the "Singapore Tiger", who specialised in jungle warfare, was also sent to Timor.

Shortly after ? arrived on Timor, on 22 May a Japanese party was moving on Remexio and an Australian patrol with the international brigade staged an ambush killing 4 or 5 Japanese soldiers and another ambush further down the track killing another 25 Japanese. In the second ambush Cpl Aitken and his patrol saw ? with a chest full of glistening medals sitting high and mighty on his white horse leading the enemy column. The first to be killed was ?. The Japanese retreated to Dili, the Australians returned to Remexio triumphant.

[edit] "You alone do not surrender to us"

Those famous words were first sent by messenger to the men of Sparrow Force by the Japanese Commander on Timor, Lieutenant General Yuichi Tsuchihashi. Winston Churchill later stated: "They alone did not surrender."

The Japanese held a considerable amount of respect for Sparrow Force. The Sparrow Force battles at Babau, Usua Ridge did achieve their purpose to delay the Japanese advance and the Japanese recognised their bravery considering the difficult situation the men of Sparrow Force faced. It was the guerilla campaign that earned the Japanese's greatest respect.

In late 1942, Army Public Relations arranged to send the famed Academy Award winning cameraman Damien Parer and a war correspondent, Bill Marien to Timor, to record the efforts of the Australian commandos. His film Men of Timor was greeted with enthusiasm by Australian audiences.
