Spaces is a virtual desktop feature developed by Apple to be included in Mac OS X v10.5. The feature enables users to set up virtual desktops (or "space") suited to particular needs of the user, without the need of creating a new account. One could for example create a "space" primarily assigned to office work and then switching to different one focussed on web surfing. Up to 16 spaces can be created, and applications can be bound to specific spaces.
The feature was announced by Steve Jobs during the opening keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference on August 7, 2006 and will ship as an integral part of the latest version of the Mac OS X in the spring of 2007.
Although the Spaces concept has been described as a "whiz-bang innovation," the concept has been around in the form of CDE-style workspaces for quite some time. In fact, previous versions of OS X have supported virtual desktops, though the functionality has only been available through the use of third party utilities such as VirtueDesktops or CodeTek VirtualDesktop.
