"Space Race" is an episode of the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1.

[edit] Plot

Major Carter is called to the SGC to meet Warrick, the Serrakin they rescued from an uncharted planet. (See Forsaken) He asks for her help to win a race in exchange for access to Serrakin ion engines. Warrick explains that it is called the Loop of Kon Garat hosted by a large coporation known as Tech Con. The race is hosted every year which anyone can enter and the winner gets a contract into Tech Con. He is able to bring the Seberus into the race since Carter recharged it with a naquadah generator. Carter asks to fly with him because the generator are precious to humans and they know how to hook it up.

On Hebridan/Serrakin homworld, SG-1 is introduced to Eamon, the Seberus' creator and Warrick's younger brother. Warrick escorted O'Neill and Daniel to the Hebridan capital building while stayed behind with Carter and Eamon to check on the Seberus. Eamon explains to Carter that since Warrick returned, work has been scarce and his wife had remarried and has children of her own. Warrick hopes to win the race to get his life back and wanted to do anything to achieve it.

The race data came in, explaining the course and who Warrick and Carter were racing with. Eamon recognized one of the racers as Jarlath who apparently is out of jail. After the work on the Seberus was done, we see some man walking up to it, carrying a tool box.

The race started and the first course was using shield to defend against weapon drones. The second was riding against the surface of the sun. Suddenly, the Seberus' systems began to shut down. Warrick did a diagnostic of the power diverter and found out that been deliberately sabotaged. Carter began to hook up the generator while Eamon and Teal'c began some investigating.

Once they were successful, the Seberus blasted out of the sun's cronosphere and used gravity to slingshot back into the race.

Meanwhile, Eamon had found out that his supervisor, Del Tynan had accessed their computer. To find evidence, he and Teal'c go to Tech Con. They got in with Teal'c as Eamon's cousin, Murray. They looked into Tynan's computer an found out he sabotaged nearly every ship in the race except a hired man named Muirios. Suddenly, they get caught by Tynan.

Back in the race, Warrick and Carte decide to rescue Jarlath and found out he had been sabotaged as well.

At Tech Con, Tynan explains to Teal'c and Eamon that he thinks that the Serrakin destroying the human race by crossbreeding and he's making sure that the winner is a human for the first step of overthrowing the Serrakin. He contacts Warrick to drop out or else he'll kill Eamon and Teal'c. Suddenly, O'Neill, Daniel and President Hagan came with guards and arrested Tynan and his men. Hagan now has the evidence to put Tynan in jail.

With Eamon and Teal'c safe, the Seberus is back in the race but in third place. Jarlath reconfigured the communications array to freeze Muirios' ship. The winner was Lael Montrose.

Later, at the SGC, Carter receives word that Warrick had been hired by Lael to co-pilot on her new contract from Tech Con and Earth has an ion engine to study. Carter swears that next year, she's going to kick butt.

[edit] Notes

  • Patrick Currie (Eamon) previously played Fifth in season six's "Unnatural Selection".
  • This is the 140th episode of the series which surpasses the total for MacGyver (139 episode) (although Richard Dean Anderson's 140th episode is actually the next episode "Avenger 2.0" since he did not appear in "Nightwalkers").
  • Hebridan has been designated P4X-131.
  • Alex Zahara takes on the role of Warrick, who was played by Dion Johnstone in "Forsaken". This marks Zahara's sixth different character that he has played on Stargate, usually under make-up. It's also the second week in a row that someone else has taken over a role originally played by Dion Johnstone. G. Patrick Currie, who plays Eamon in this episode, took over Johnstone's role as Chaka in the previous week's "Enemy Mine". Presumably Johnstone was off filming somewhere and was unavailable.
  • This episode bears a resemblance to the Star Trek Voyager Episode "Drive" where Paris and Torres enter a rigged "space race" in the Delta Flyer
