The Soviet Military Administration in Germany (Russian: Советская военная администрация в Германии, СВАГ or SVAG — German: Sowjetische Militäradministration in Deutschland, SMAD) was the Soviet military government, headquartered in Karlshorst, which directly ruled the eastern areas of Germany from 1945 until the establishment of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1949.
