- Well, the idea was to be very lenient and make this basically edit-at-will to start, so we can build experience in evaluating sound recordings and their place in articles. Changing it every day gives us the experience, but it won't take too much acrimony as there won't be any sort of formal voting process at first. I only had the idea of genre-days so we could ensure some diversity, and that classical music, which as of now we have by far the most of, isn't overrepresented.--Pharos 14:52, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
- This is a brilliant idea - it's now being used on the main page of the Music Portal. An update every day is an excellent idea because it will keep people interested, and give a good insight into all the musical instruments out there. Madder 22:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
I'm the one who had this idea originally and implimented it on commons. The goal there was to limit it to full length songs (as opposed to 10-30 second fair use clips). I set it up much like the selected anniversaries are set up - a hard coded value for each day of the year. I think that would be best, as it saves a great deal of labor. However, if you do that, you will quickly find there are simply not enough full length music files to go around. To that end, I made commons "Media of the day" (as opposed to sound of the day) and included videos (of which we have around 100) Raul654 01:11, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know if we should have a time criterion, but certainly fair use sound recordings would be unacceptable here as well. I only implemented the eclectic day-of-the-week format to encourage variety and add a dash of color, and I will personally maintain it if noone else does. Though we wiil have a new selection everyday, I don't think there will ever be a shortage as I intend to upload many new sound recordings over the coming weeks, and hope this project will encourage others to do likewise (especially for Wikipedians creating their own recordings). The idea is to build a "sound community" on Wikipedia, not just to offer a venue for media other than pictures.--Pharos 01:39, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

- Oh, let me help you out there. Without a doubt, the #1 song on my wishlist is the prelude to Bach's 'Suite No. 1 in G major' (BWV 1007, 1st movement). I would be *VERY* grateful to anyone cellists or violinists out there who can provide a copyleft recording. Here is a zip file containing the sheet music for both violin and cello. I moved the daily templates to {{SOTD/{{CURRENTWEEKDAYNAME}}}} instead of {{SOTD {{CURRENTWEEKDAYNAME}}}} to reduce the clutter in the Template namespace. This is how POTD is done (Wikipedia:POTD/June 21, 2006, for example). Λυδαcιτγ 17:13, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

- Well, it's fine for a piece of game music, and I'm sure it's a real plus for that article, but I'm not sure what interest it could hold for a general audience. Unless it particularly highlights some important general trend in game music, I doubt it belongs in a general venue. I still of course do think that game music is a fine addition to a game article.--Pharos 03:03, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

OK, after my disappearance for Wikibreak, I'm going to try to revive this again. For the moment, that'll mostly mean combing the Wikipedia:Free sound resources and making new sound picks. I'm low-level imploring someone else here to help me with this a bit so we can get things going. And if anyone is going to record things on their own, that'd be fantastic.
