Talk:Southernmost point in the continental United States

[edit] Why Southernmost Point?

Why is this identified as the southernmost point and not the Dry Tortugas? There are areas in the Dry Tortugas west of Key West that are part of the US, and are further south. It seems like there must be a story here. Is this merely the furthest south that is accessible by road?RPellessier | Talk 06:22, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

What? The Dry Tortugas are 70 miles west and a tad north of Key West. Care to look at a map? On a side note however, you're almost right. I read somewhere that Ballast Key (a privately owned island west of Key West (and just a tad dipping down a bit south before it borders that 10,000 trench off the continental plate) is actually the southernmost point in the 48 states. But hey - wait a minute. Hawaii is the southernmost state and Hilo is the southernmost city. Forget I said anything. Nice to meet you. Bye.
