Southwood Secondary School is a high school in Cambridge, Ontario for students in West Galt and Ayr.
Founded in 1962, the school now has one of the smallest number of students in the county. The building was originally meant to be a temporary factory/storage facility, but due to a shortage of money was turned into an education facility. Students are mostly of a caucasian background, with little diversity in the area. Few Muslim, South American, and Asian students attend.
It became the subject of controversy in 2003 when it seemed that this undersized school would be closed, as funding was needed to build the Huron Heights Secondary School, elsewhere in the Region. After lengthy protests, differing proposals, and the re-election of the board trustees, it was announced in mid-2004 that there was room in the budget to build the new school and keep Southwood open.
Southwood is renowned for the calibre of its music and mathematics programs, well-respected by universities and residents of the area. Prior to the 2005/2006 schoolyear, Southwood also hosted the area's French Immersion program, which has since moved to Galt Collegiate Institute. Beginning in the 2006-2007 school year, Southwood will host the region's PAL program.
