Southwest Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Southwest Center City (SWCC) is a neighborhood in the southern section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by South Street, on the south by Washington Avenue, on the west by the Schuylkill River, and by Broad Street on the east. Newer residents have begun to call it the Graduate Hospital area (or G-Ho for short) or South of South (or SoSo, in the late 1980s-early 1990s). [citation needed]
It is rich in history, architectural landmarks, and charming nineteenth-century rowhomes (more commonly called rowhouses except in some parts of South Philly), which some newer residents call townhouses or townhomes. A transitional area between Center City and South Philadelphia, it is home to several community service organizations, many churches, a few retail establishments and light industry. The neighborhood began taking shape after the Civil War. In 1870, it was predominantly Irish, but that lasted just a generation. By 1920, a majority of its residents were African Americans, and it experienced significant in-migration from the south prior to, during, and immediately after World War II. For years it was a solid working-class neighborhood with church-loving people (22 churches).
In recent years the area has experienced exponential growth and gentrification with hundreds of single family homes and condominium units and dozens of new retail establishments.
