Southside, Alabama

Southside is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the 'Gadsden, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area'. At the 2000 census the population was 7,036. This sprawling suburb of Gadsden, Alabama is one of the fastest growing cities in Northeast Alabama.

Southside is located at 33°54′13″N, 86°1′34″W (33.903597, -86.026105)GR1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 49.5 km² (19.1 mi²). 49.0 km² (18.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (1.05%) is water.

Southside occupies the southern part of Etowah County between the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and Coosa River.

The city is served by the Etowah County Board of Education. The city has one elementary school, one high school, and shares a middle school with neighboring Rainbow City. Students also have the option of attending schools in the Gadsden City school system.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,036 people, 2,653 households, and 2,170 families residing in the city. The population density was 143.7/km² (372.2/mi²). There were 2,783 housing units at an average density of 56.9/km² (147.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.11% White, 0.61% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,653 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.6% were married couples living together, 6.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.2% were non-families. 16.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $52,464, and the median income for a family was $58,427. Males had a median income of $41,664 versus $29,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,936. About 2.2% of families and 3.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1% of those under age 18 and 5.4% of those age 65 or over.
