Southport is a city in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. It was founded in the 19th century as a place of loading, unloading, embarkation, and debarkation by teamsters driving goods north to Indianapolis, making it a true "port", even though it is completely landlocked.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,852 people, 733 households, and 521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,117.3/km² (2,886.2/mi²). There were 769 housing units at an average density of 463.9/km² (1,198.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.54% White, 0.38% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 1.30% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.38% of the population.
There were 733 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% were non-families. 23.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $56,719, and the median income for a family was $59,926. Males had a median income of $48,295 versus $28,125 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,374. About 4.3% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 3.6% of those age 65 or over.

[edit] Special Aspects of Southport
Southport has a small area called Downtown Southport. It is located on Southport Road between Madison Avenue and McFarland Road. Downtown consists of antique shops, furniture stores, decorator shops, chinese restaurant, dry-cleaners, pizza delivery and the city famous Long's Bakery. A dance studio, Christian bookstore/cafe, nail salon, electrical/mechanical company, day spa, dog groomer, automotive repair, photographer and property management firm are also located in Downtown Southport. City offices are located north of Southport Rd. at 6901 Derbyshire Rd. and are adjacent to the City Park. A shelter house (activity center) in the City Park can be rented out for parties or get togethers. The shelter house is also the home of non-profit, PSCS:Perry Senior Citizens Services.
During Christmas time, the city always puts up different decorations under the street lamps. Over the summer, the city displays American Flags on all utility poles throughout the city, overseen by a group of dedicated volunteers. During the weeks before Halloween, a popular 'Haunted House' is hosted on the grounds of the Southport Little League Ball Park.
Local Government is accomplished with help from an elected Mayor, Clerk-Treasurer and Common Council of 4 district representatives and 1 at-large representative.
The GSBA (Greater Southport Business Alliance) represents a network of entrepreneurs, professionals, business owners, and managers whose mission is to guide, inspire, and promote the best interests of the economy and quality of life for the greater Southport area.
Members have aligned in an effort to collaborate, communicate and cooperate with other Southport stakeholders to build economic opportunities and a strong community for all.

Southport is also the proud home of Boy Scout Troop 120. Based out of a local church the troop does many service projects such as the Southport Clean Up Day and Disaster clean up after the 2001 tornado.
