Southpark Village
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Southpark Village is an estate of private houses built during the mid 1990s, appealing mostly to the lower-income middle class of Glasgow, Scotland. It is an example of how larger cities in the UK are starting to push into even more rural land.
South Park has drawn a lot of the Asian community of Glasgow.
Most of the residents would consider themselves middle class, but will almost certainly have working class roots. A significant number of homeowners are from the surrounding council housing schemes which have mostly been demolished. These were Nitshill, and Darnley. The builders ( the site was owned by L+C but some was sold to Beazer homes) at the time were made to have some of the housing as low rent for people the council wished to rehouse. Some was and still is used for ex drug addicts and homeless families. The estate's history is interesting, even to the casual observer: The entire area was once owned by Lord Darnley, who ran linen works in the area. In later years the surrounding area was successfully and exhaustively tunneled for coal; This culminated, during the late stages of the mine's life, in a catastrophic explosion killing many local miners. The effects of this were felt as recently as the late 90s when a mine shaft collapsed in an area near the estate (but not near enough to be a danger), leading to a massive land fill operation which successfully prevented the land around the shaft from collapsing any further. The area near the B&Q roundabout was prone to flooding. As the Beazer houses in that area were being built it was flooded for a week to a depth of around four feet.
