Southland TV is a regional television station in New Zealand which started in the mid-1990s as Mercury Television.
The privately owned station broadcasts nationwide on SKY Television channel 90.
Much of the programming revolves around SIT2LRN multimedia distance learning provided by the Southern Institute of Technology. In addition the station broadcasts a local bulletin of news, weather, lifestyle and sport each weeknight called 'South Today', live talkback and programmes from various other regional stations. When no programming is available they rebroadcast satellite feeds of Deutsche Welle or Bloomberg TV.
Early in its history the station attracted local controversy because of a large amount of investment by Combined Rural Traders, a co-operative company owned by the farming community, even though its signal was directed at Invercargill City and unable to be received by many of the shareholders. There were also technical difficulties with the original antenna system and the choice of channel 5 on VHF proved problematic because of co-channel interference from high-power TVNZ transmissions from Obelisk in Central Otago.
