Southern Division (AFL)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Southern Division is one of four divisions of the Arena Football League. It consists of the Tampa Bay Storm, Orlando Predators, New Orleans VooDoo, Georgia Force, and Austin Wranglers. The New Orleans VooDoo, a member of the division in 2004 and 2005, temporarily suspended operations following Hurricane Katrina, but are returning to play in the 2007 AFL season. The Kansas City Brigade, members of the Southern Division in 2006, have been moved to the Central Division with the Colorado Crush, Chicago Rush, Nashville Kats, and the Grand Rapids Rampage.

The Southern Division has been marked for its entire existence as being the most brutal and competitive division in the AFL. Formed in 1995, it has produced 10 ArenaBowl teams and 5 champions. Rivalries such as the Tampa Bay Storm and Orlando Predators, known as the "War On I-4," used to define this division, but the newer teams (New Orleans VooDoo and Georgia Force) have risen to the top in recent years.
