Southeast University

Southeast University (SEU, Pinyin: Dōngnán Dàxué, Simplified Chinese: 东南大学), colloquially Dong Nan (Pinyin: Dōng Nán , Simplified Chinese: 东南) is a university located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. Southeast University (SEU) is one of the national key universities administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the first universities accredited by the State Council to determine and approve the qualifications of professor, associateprofessor and doctorial supervisor. In 1995, the university passed the assessment by the Ministry of Education for "Project 211" and was listed as one of the universities that will be financed by the state as part of the project. And in 1996, it was assessed as an outstanding university for its excellent undergraduate education.

Southeast University's origins can be traced back to 1902. In the year Sanjiang Normal College was founded and it evolved as: Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University National Central University and Nanjing University. During the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher learning in 1952, Nanjing Institute of Technology was established on the original site of Nanjing University based on the College of Technology of Nanjing University. In May 1988, Nanjing Institute of Technology was named Southeast University. And in April 2000, Nanjing Railway Medical College, Nanjing College of Communications and Nanjing Geological School were merged into the university, whose main campus is located at the center of the ancient capital city of Nanjing, a sacred place for education since the Ming Dynasty. At present, Southeast University has five campuses, covering a total area of 1,550,000 square metres, with a built-up area of 886,000 m².

Southeast University is one of the top 10 universities in scientific research and development in China. It has over 20 national or provincial research institutes, with a number of key research bases. Over the last decade, it has completed more than 1000 research projects, of which over 500 have been awarded the national, provincial or municipal science and technology prizes. Its research fund exceeded 150 million yuan in 1999. The SEU Architecture Design and Research Institute, which is one of the few national first-class design institutes, has undertaken various major projects. The SEU-affiliated Zhongda Hospital was set up in 1935 and rated as "Class A Grade 3" by the Ministry of Public Health.
