[edit] English department
The teachers of the English language are Mr. Blasiman, Miss Chess, Mrs. J. Dunn, Mr. Lawrence, Mrs. Marsh, Mrs. Oostdyk, Mrs. Oyster, and Mrs. Stitle. Mr. Blasiman teaches special ed. English classes.
Miss Chess teaches both 9th grade and 12th grade College Prep English courses. Her classes are set up to prepare the students for college right from the start. With a heavy focus on grammar and mechanics during this first year, she strives to ensure that her students are able to properly write at a college level by the end of their senior year. Her 12th grade classes focus on English literature. The senior years starts off by working with Beowulf, an old epic from the Anglo-Saxon era of early England. From there, the course progresses chronologically through England's literature. While having a reputation for being strict--and somewhat strange--her classes definately help the students excel at writing in all formats, whether it be persuasively, informatively, or creatively.
Mrs. J. Dunn teaches Regular English 10 and 11, as well as Basic English 10. She is also (for the 2006-2007 school year) teaching the Young Adult Novel course. Mr. Lawrence teaches Regular English 9 Mrs. Marsh teaches 11th and 12th grade English. Mrs. Oostdyk teaches special ed. English classes. Mrs. Oyster teaches both English 9 and Remedial Reading. Mrs. Stitle teaches both English 9 and 10 as well as the Young Adult Novel class. Her 10th grade College Prep class is focused on World Literature. It explores many of the aspects of writings from around the world, and the itinerary for her class changes frequently. During the 2005-2006 year in her class, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Dante's Inferno were studied amongst other things.
The projects in her class often involve a high level of creativity and, importantly, quite a bit of fun. During her class, there will be several projects of this sort. You are also sure to read at least one of Shakespeare's plays, and possibly be asked to act out scenes with a group of people.
