[edit] Meaning

Moby has said that the song is about a car ride in post-apocalyptic New York City. The lyrics could conceivably apply to any urban environment plagued by violence as in the words:

Here we are now going to the west side
weapons in hand as we go for a ride ...
where there's love and darkness and my side arm ...
I pick up my friends and we hope we won't die

Moby has also said that the song was inspired by his visits to Chicago and his love for its house scene. [1]

[edit] Reissue

"South Side" appears as Track 5 on Moby's 1999 album Play, and was originally recorded with Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. However, Moby dropped the duet from the album due to technical problems. The Moby/Stefani version of "South Side" is available on the song's single and on the reissue of Play.
