South Shore Plaza

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

South Shore Plaza is New England's largest shopping mall, with close to 2 million square feet of retail and dining space, including a 227,000 square foot Macy's, Sears, Lord and Taylor, Nordstrom (opening 2009), and a large food court. In 2009, Nordstrom will open a 3 level, 150,000 sq.ft. store replacing the vacated Macy's created by the Macy's/Filene's merger.

[edit] History

The mall was built in 1961 as an open-air plaza with one department store (Filene's) and 30 smaller stores. the 303,000 square foot Jordan Marsh (since converted to Macy's) opened in 1968. Lord and Taylor opened in 1978, and Sears opened in 1980. Over the years the mall has undergone significant expansion and modernization, and bears little resemblance to the original product. By 1981 the South Shore Plaza was a one level mall with 100 stores. The expansion in the mid to late 1990s added a second level (including "Boardwalk Cafes", the food court) and nearly doubled the size of the mall. Today it contains over 200 stores and is completely enclosed. The mall has a bright and airy feel, largely because of abundant skylighting and wide, spacious corridors.

[edit] Location

South Shore Plaza is in the Boston metropolitan area, located off Interstate 93 in Braintree, Massachusetts. Around it there are several other stores such as Circuit City, and restaurants like Uno Chicago Grill and T.G.I. Friday's
