South Plainfield is a Borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 21,810.

South Plainfield is located at 40°34′51″N, 74°24′50″W (40.580703, -74.414015)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 21.7 km² (8.4 mi²). 21.7 km² (8.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.48%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 21,810 people, 7,151 households, and 5,856 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,007.3/km² (2,609.8/mi²). There were 7,307 housing units at an average density of 337.5/km² (874.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 77.74% White, 8.56% African American, 0.22% Native American, 7.57% Asian, 3.48% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.66% of the population.

There were 7,151 households out of which 37.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.1% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size was 3.35.

In the borough the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $67,466, and the median income for a family was $72,745. Males had a median income of $47,465 versus $34,329 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $25,270. About 2.3% of families and 3.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.7% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.

The Borough of South Plainfield operates under the Borough form of municipal government, consisting of a Mayor and six Councilpersons elected at large. The Mayor is elected to a four-year term and may succeed that term by re-election. The six Council members are elected at-large for terms of three years on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.

The current Mayor of South Plainfield is Charles Butrico (D). Members of the South Plainfield Borough Council are Council President Dennis J. Cerami (D), Matthew P. Anesh (R), Robert Bengivenga, Jr. (R), Raymond S. Petronko (D), Robert Cusick (D)[1].

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

South Plainfield is in the Seventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 18th Legislative District[2].

New Jersey's Seventh Congressional District, covering portions of Hunterdon County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and Union County, is represented by Mike Ferguson (R). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 18th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Barbara Buono (D, Edison) and in the Assembly by Peter J. Barnes (D, Edison) and Patrick J. Diegnan (D, South Plainfield). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Middlesex County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Middlesex County's Freeholders are: Freeholder Director David B. Crabiel, Freeholder Deputy Director Stephen J. "Pete" Dalina, Camille Fernicola, H. James Polos, John Pulomena, Christopher D. Rafano and Blanquita B. Valenti.

The South Plainfield Public Schools serves students in prekindergarten through twelfth grade. Schools in the district are four Elementary Schools (K-4) — John F. Kennedy Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School, John E. Riley Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary SchoolGrant School for grades 5 & 6, South Plainfield Middle School for grades 7 & 8, and South Plainfield High School for grades 9-12.

The South Plainfield Police Department is issued FCC callsign WNWN473 for use on 453.32500 MHz and 458.32500 MHz for public safety use.
