South Memphis is one of the oldest portions on Memphis, it is located just south of downtown. In its early days it primarily an agrarian community. Those who did not work on the farms, usually commuted to downtown. It was, and still is, generally considered to be one of the economically poorest parts of Memphis. Today, instead of farms, it is largely covered with abandoned businesses.

South Memphis is glorified in music; referenced by many local Memphis rap artists as the "hell" of Memphis. Three 6 Mafia member, Lord Infamous, has a song called "South Memphis Bitch", in which he depicts the brutal side of South Memphis. Rappers Gangsta Blac and Playa Fly are also from this section of Memphis.DJ Paul and Gangsta Boo is also from this area also. The Crips and Gangster Disciples and some Grape Street Watts Crips are mostly in this section of Memphis.
