South Dekalb Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
South Dekalb Mall is a shopping mall located in the Decatur, GA neighborhood of Dekalb County, GA. The mall originally opened in 1968 with anchors Rich's and JCPenney. Its anchors today are Amazing Rooms and Macy's (in the former Rich's spot.) While the need for the mall was long significant, white flight that occurred around the center in the 1970s not long after the mall opened resulted in a mall ultimately and almost exclusively serving African-American customers. This racial distinction unfortunately resulted in the mall never being expanded or updated like other area malls.
The changes to South Dekalb Mall proved to be very positive in the late 1990s. The mall then served one of the most affluent African-American populations in the nation and the Rich's at the mall was more profitable than any in the chain. The success was in part due to the store responding to the wishes of the community on fashion. In 2001, JCPenney left the mall to anchor rival Mall at Stonecrest, the first upscale mall in the region in nearly 25 years. While Stonecrest Mall has hurt South Dekalb, the mall continues to survive due to continued investment in the center.
American Screen Works is building a 14-screen Movie theater with stadium seating in a former anchor, due to be completed by March 2007.
