South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) was founded in 1885 as "Dakota School of Mines", primarily as an institution to teach mining engineering and related disciplines. SDSM&T is located in Rapid City, South Dakota on the north-eastern edge of the Black Hills, where students have access to year-round outdoor recreational activities. SDSM&T is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. More than 80 percent of graduates gain real-life experience through internships and co-ops, which shows in placement rates of more than 95 percent and starting salaries after graduation averaging nearly $50,000.

SDSM&T is organized into two colleges. The College of Science and Letters contains the departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science, Chemistry, Military Science, Physical Education, and the Physics department. The College of Engineering contains the departments of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Geology and Geological Engineering, and the Mining Engineering and Management Program.

Modern day "Mines" provides a number of degree programs for students including 16 engineering and science undergraduate programs, 12 master's degree programs and 4 PhD programs. Undergraduate programs include Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Geological Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mining Engineering, Interdisciplinary Sciences, Metallurgical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Mining Engineering and Management, and Mechanical Engineering. SDSM&T has doctoral programs in Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Geology and Geological Engineering, Materials Engineering and Science, and Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.

SDSM&T has a number of student organizations, including a disproportionate number of christian orgnanizations. The Greek organizations include Alpha Chi Sigma, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omega Epsilon, Delta Sigma Phi, Theta Tau, and Triangle. Student government organizations include the Resident Hall Association and the Student Association. Student media organizations include KTEQ (the campus radio station) and "the Raver" (the campus newspaper, formerly known as "the Tech").

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology has been named one of America’s 100 Best College Buys for the ninth consecutive year. The School of Mines is one of only two colleges or universities in South Dakota to make the list. For the 2006-7 year, total annual costs for tuition, fees, room, board, and books is approximately $11,400 for South Dakota residents and $12,600 for non-residents. That includes a Gateway TabletPC.

SDSM&T has an average undergraduate enrollment of about 1700 students. SDSM&T has a total enrollment of about 2300 students.
