South China Athletic Association (SCAA, Traditional Chinese: 南華) is a Hong Kong football club. Nicknamed "Shaolin Temple" or the "Caroliner", SCAA produced many great Hong Kong footballers over the years. It is one of a handful of football clubs in Hong Kong that has its own private training pitch.

[edit] History
SCAA was developed from "The Chinese Football Team" which formed in 1904. In 1908, it changed its name to the South China Football Club. In 1916, it became a memeber of the Hong Kong Football Association. It first competed in League match (Divison 2) in season 1917-18. The club sent two separate teams to compete in Division 1 and Divison 2 respectively in the following year. In 1920, it formally got its present name South China Athletic Association.
[edit] Glory
Traditionally the most popular club in the city, it won the Hong Kong League 27 times, the Senior Challenge Shield 17 times, the Viceroy Cup 8 times, the FA Cup 7 times and the League Cup once. The team had captured all the 4 main tropies in seasons 87-88 and 90-91. In 2001/2002, the team was awarded the AFC Team of the Month (Nov.).

[edit] Recent Failure
3 years ago, the club decided to hold a "All-Chinese policy". All foreign players were released or sold, and the team was solely formed by local Hong Kong and mainland Chinese players. However, this was proved to be unsuccessful. The team, originally a candidate for chasing the champion, continued to struggle against relegated at the bottom of the league.
As they failed to beat Citizen in the last game of the 2005-06 season, South China will be relegated for the first time since 1983. However, the HKFA is currently considering to expand the First Division to 10 teams; On 14 June, 2006, HKFA has approved a request from South China to remain in the first division with promise of strengthening the quality of the club (documentation was listed in the HKFA's website)
Some ex-players and coaches have stated that one of the reasons for the recent failure is due to the unprofessionalism of the mainland players, which made the team unable to compete with other teams having foreign players.[1].
[edit] The 06/07 season
After much speculations, the club finally announced on 1st August 2006 that experienced Portuguese coach Jorge Amaral would take over the helm from Ku Kam Fai as head coach. 8 new players joined the club, including 5 players from Portugal, 2 from the mainland and Man Pei Tak from Hong Kong Rangers. More signings were expected.
On 24 November 2006, Jorge Amaral was fired due to the unsatisfactory performance of the team, especially the 2-3 loss to the semi-professional team HKFC. South China signed Casemiro Mior as the new coach. [2] [3] Casemiro Mior was the head coach of the club during 1999-2003 when he brought lots of glory to the club, including a 3-2 win over J. League giant Shimizu S-Pulse in 2001 AFC Champions League. [1]

- 2) 南華之歌
This is not the official song of South China, and neither was the original official fans' song. It was sung by 張武孝(大L/Big L), and became very well-known after being released in 1977, especially during late 70's and the 80's; during that period South China was a perennial challenger for the top spots in the league, and the song describes how strong and famous the team was.
