[edit] Democratic Primary

The South Carolina Democratic Party held their primary for governor on June 12, 1990. The popularity of Governor Campbell with the white voters of the state caused the Democratic primary to be dominated by black voters. As a result, Theo Mitchell, a black state senator from Greenville became the first black nominee for the office of governor in South Carolina.

[edit] General Election

The general election was held on November 6, 1990 and Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. was reelected overwhelmingly as governor of South Carolina. The defeat marked the second largest loss by a Democratic nominee for Governor in the state of South Carolina and consequently the Democrats have not nominated a black man for Governor ever since. Turnout was higher than the previous gubernatorial election because of a black candidate for governor.
